You may have noticed the new addition to the sidebar: I've joined the Pipe Smoke Ring, a webring that links several pipe related sites together. If you have a site about pipes, click here to join. And tell me about it, so I can write something about it! =) My-Pipes Round-Up I haven't done one of these in ages, so away we go! A lot of good questions this time around... The labor of love that is building a cake. How much does that blackened wall contribute to a good smoke? What happens to people when they have to have the best? Are meerschaums the best? Three Nuns is apparently one of the best blends... join in with these fellows and have some imported to the US. Smoking bans in Denmark are coming up.. but I've heard that the law is being ignored. Here are some pictures of uncut briar. A new poll has started: Does MacBaren blends bite your tongue? Also, check out this older poll: Would you work at a B&M?
How to tell the date of a McClelland tin. JMuraco of Straight Grain was available to back up this forum post, as well as another member of #asp. It seems that the first four numbers are irrelevant, and that the last two number indicate the date of tinning.
Talbert Pipes was at the Rheinbach Pipe Show, and has made a good write up of the show over at his blog. More pictures available here.
Straightgrain started a thread on ASP about some vintage photos of pipe smokers on his Flickr account. Check out the slideshow, or view or view the photos individually here. Pipes and Tobacco Magazine: Foundations Pipes and Tobaaco Magazine sent me a notice today informing me that Foundations is starting soon. P&T said the following about the new site: Pipe smokers are spread across the globe, but Foundations will provide a community for pipe enthusiasts to meet and share information, personal experiences, tips, reviews, history and much more. We've recruited an impressive group of experts to participate and provide the most authoritative information possible, including five recipients of the prestigious Doctor of Pipes award. No more fruitless searches for arcane pipe information-with Foundations, you can ask someone who really knows. Looking at the P&T Foundations site, it appears as though this will be a paid subscription service, not a free board like ASP and My-Pipes. It already has a base community of "experts" in the hobby, and it also appears to have features like Tobacco Cellar, image storage, and more. It may be nice, and it may just suck. May as well sign up for the free trial and see.
Greetings once more, and welcome to today's ASP filter. There is some concern by a poster regarding Peterson's Mark Twain pipe. Which pipe, and is it an exact replica? Time will tell when Michael Beckner posts the pictures he took in Twain's house. Continuing in my long line of filtering posts about oddball pipes, What were they thinking when they made this pipe? My answer: Donkey Nuts. Rheinbach Pipe Show There has been a pipe show over in Rheinbach, Germany. There's some pictures here, here, and here.
Save the Calabash (pdf). Gourd or not, the calabash is a special pipe. The famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes smoked one, and many pipe smokers continue to smoke them today. The calabash seems to still be a popular pipe shape, but the gourd calabash is falling out of favor. Recent efforts have been underway to save this pipe. Enter Thomas Martin, who has been helping out by making some gourd>a calabash pipes of his own. Find some more calabash pipes here, and some more information on the making one of here. ASP Round Up Several great posts have been made to the ASP usenet group lately. Check out this sad story by Da Bear, Pauls' views on the Frank Method of pipe packing, and this post on the subject of ASP and other boards.
A new wiki about pipes has cropped up. This one is a bit simplistic and currently lacks a lot of good information, but that can all change with a dedicated user base. Some of the best information on this site can be found looking at the Pipe Makers section. Hopefully this site will take off, but in the meantime, you may as well check out these pictures. The latest and greatest The ASP FAQ. Updated and released for August 2007. "The Persian Slipper" Curling Competition Yet another curling competition is heating up on ASP. The Persian Slipper is going to start on August 28th, and will run until September 2nd. Check out some previous events.
Previously discussed. The results are in. Congratulations to the winners!
A news story about being a grand champion pipe smoker.
Thomas Martin wrote an excellent response to this question over at the My-Pipes Community. He referenced this article by R.D. Field which explains the briar plant and its root system, as well as the finish of a pipe. Following this is another article commenting on the gender of the plant and the curing of the wood, both of which make a profound impact on the quality of the finished pipe.
At least, the updates are complete for now. The comments section has been removed due to malicious use by spammers, and I don't expect it to return until I can find a better comment system for my content management system. Sooner or later I hope to design a decent logo for the top of the site. If you can help out with that, or if you just want to send general love/hate mail, contact me at triolus@gmail.com. - triolus Pipe Lore: Blending your own Tobaccos Another award-winning article over at Pipe Lore about making your own blends, complete with a few recipes from Barry Milroad. I have a blend of my own that I'm waiting to try out and here are a few others you can try. The Peterson Pipe Project The Mission of this new blog is to catalog and appreciate those pipes made by Peterson. Love them or hate them, Peterson puts out good pipes at great prices, and this site is an excellent guide to this long-running line of pipes.
Excuse the mess please, as pipefilter is undergoing a few changes. I've been wanting to update just about everything concerning the apperance of this site, and I'm going to begin today. The site should still function properly, but it may look wierd as I make some changes to a live website. Please bear with me. Thanks, triolus Pipas Sigmund He sure does make it look easy. More information at his website including his pipes and these odd pieces. It's not pipe related... But it's the coolest thing I've ever seen on the internet. Making Clay Pipes Interesting video on making clay pipes.
The web magazine Pipe Lore has a new article up about the Frank Method of packing a pipe, complete with video. Of course, other methods of packing your pipe include the gravity fill and the just stuff it method. Here are some more videos by Frank. Asking Metafilter about Pipes Community weblog Metafilter has a section where users can ask questions about anything they want. I found two posts directly related to pipe smoking, the first of which can be found here. A much better question was posted over this way and lead to a very well written response.
A report about how smoking can be prevenative agaisnt Parkinsons. Mark Twain Curling Competition The next round of curling competition is about to begin. Great Pawn Hunter has organized another event. "Curling" is a slow smoking c ompetition that is a test to see who can keep their pipe lit and smoking on only two lights. The person with the highest time wins. More rules here.
I found a few good posts on ASP today. A moment of silence for Jim Benjamin, a well known gent in the pipe community, and his work of repairing our favorite pipes. An interesting article on different cellaring style can be found here. Don't forget that Tobacco Cellar is a great resource of keeping one organized. Finally, The Most Important Post You Will Ever Read is yet another scary tale of taxes and fees. Better stock up that cellar. Stevie Ray Vaughan Smoking and Playing Stevie Ray Vaughan smoking a pipe while playing the blues. (Via). On Wants, Needs, and Excess Puff Daddy was recently submitted two great articles on wants and needs and excess in pipe smoking.
The ASP Featured Site is currently A Passion for Pipes, a nice little site with all sorts of pictures to drool over. Check out some pipes from around the world, some other lovely pictures, and some faces you might recognize. Blend of the Month Club: July 2007 The Blend of the Month Club has offered up a new selection: Germain's King Charles Mixture. More information available at Tobacco Reviews. Meerschaum Pipes from the Ground Up A great video over on YouTube about the making of Meerschaum pipes. #alt.smokers.pipes The ASP chatroom (warning: java applet) on Undernet is a great place to visit to chat about this that and the other with your fellow pipe smoking friends. You can either use the first link to join in, or visit the interface over at MPC. However, the best solution is to grab an IRC Client such as XChat which can work on all operating systems. Statistics for the IRC chat room #alt.smokers.pipes can be found right here.
At 79, Alan Sillitoe, author of the ground-breaking 1950s novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, is an unrepentant smoker. He has smoked every day since he was a 14-year-old factory boy.
Today, we get personal. Alaska Stories is a quaint collection of stories about smoking, including some very old pipes, a humidor made out of a tree, and other humorous tidbits. Big Jack may not win any awards for design, but he sure has chronicled several pipe shows over the past few years. The Professor. I read a lot of this site when I first started smoking a pipe. Read his reviews, and check out his how-to on smoking a pipe. The Making of a calabash pipe: an amazing read. The Yellow Pages for pipe smokers is another great resource to bookmark. These people have a decent collection of pipes. Donkey Nuts.
Today, I again went to the links section over at Pipes.org. This time, I made the Distributor section my main concern. Here, I found two really good websites that I think you'll enjoy. Tobacco Barn is Just Another Online Tobacco Store. They sell plenty of different pipes and tobaccos, as well as cigars and accessories, but this site is so loaded down with Meerschaum information, it will make your head spin. Take a look at some Meerschaum history, and also be sure to read over care, break in, and coloring for your new Meerschaum. Monjure International is another pipe and tobacco seller, but makes this site great are the collection of photo albums. Take a look at some Ardor carvers working their trade here, along with tag-team duos The Rinaldos and The Nielsens. More can be found on this site, even a tribute to Little Man.
I made it my mission to filter through the huge pile of links that are in Pipes.org's Links page. Today I managed to wade through the Accessories section, as well as dabble in Organization. I plan to do one catergory per day that I update this site, and today I will start with Accessories. Here's the best of what I've found so far. Pewter tampers, Custom Tampers, and tampers that look like Ink Pens. I'm not a fan of anything besides my trusty Leatherman, but many claim greater smoking pleasure with a high priced tamper. Elegant humidors can be found to store your cigars, and as for storing your pipes, why not take a look at all these pipe racks? Want something larger? Two Cousins might be able to help. I bet you want to make your own pipe? I personally picked up a block from the people over at PIMO, but P.E. Hermann (not Pee-Wee) and these people can also give you the hook up on briar.
Pipelore has recently be updated with a new article. "Pipe Moretti: The Pipe and the Pipe Maker -- Both Italian Gems" is the story of Joseph Hornsby, and how he became a fan of Pipe Moretti, an Italian pipe maker, who produces affordable and beautiful work. The Nexus of Pipes Probably one of the oldest pipe-related sites out there, Pipes.org is no worse for wear. The site contains a lot of useful inform ation, most impressive of which is the list of various links, but the photo gallery is just as impressive. Check out this picture of a solider smoking a pipe, along with those of great authors. Who can forget Gandalf? Certainly not Van Gogh. Someone get these kids away from my pipes! More serious information includes articles related to your health, submitted user stories, and more. Check it out! Russian Pipe Maker A video of a Russian pipe maker working on his craft. They make it look so easy. (Via). Unusual Pipes In honor of the Foureth of July, Straight Grain has continued posting in "Unusual Pipes" series. This time, we have a Red, White, and Blue, as well as a Liberty Bell. "Vicar's unholy smoke stunt fails" A vicar who lit his pipe in a Kent police station as a protest against the smoking ban has failed in his attempt to get himself arrested. (Via)
This MPC blog post is an interesting read. Great debate is going on about the history of pipe smoking in the thread, and the actual blog post hits on the udying question of our time: How long do I need to rest my pipes? New Poll at MPC There's a new poll over at the My Pipes Community. The question is: How many pipe smokers do you know outside the internet community? Personally, I know zero people, though I do know that at least one or two co-workers share in the pipe. If you're feeling lonely, why not join a Pipe Club near you? If one doesn't exist, you can always start your own.
Want an ASP zippo? Check out their site. Waiting for a special occasion? Open that tin! An ASP post, which just so happens to be from fellow from "Straight Grain", promotes a yearly opening of the tin for those special blends we've been saving. Straight Grain I was introduced to a new blog today, and decided to post about it. I got the same favor in return, it seems. Straight Grain is written by il Tigre' and is a wonderful site. While the page has recently been a blog of recent acquisitions, I've uncovered many gems, such as this wonderful story, and one about the not-too-untimely "Haddo's Death". Also found here are a couple of reviews, including one on my personal favorite Old Gowrie. Not enough? Check this out.
Talbert Pipes: The Pipe Blog is an interesting site. Mostly a chronicle of the pipes Mr. Talbert is working on, but it also contains some amusing parts. Definitely worth a read. Gerald Ford Memorial Burley Curling Competition This competition started yesterday, and will end tonight. You can read the rules here. ASP Blend of the Month Club The ASP Blend of the Month Club has a new blend up for you to try out, or revisit as the case may be. This time around it is Butera Royal Vintage: Dark Stoved, and you can find it on Tobacco Reviews right over here. While you're at it, Steven, the blog's author, would like to have some feedback on the Blend of the Month Club. Talk with him on ASP over here.
Raise your pipes! "Much has been said and written about our brother/sisterhood, and we all know that most of it is true and well founded. However, setting up one day in the year to commemorate this brother/sisterhood would, in our opinion, strengthen this notion and infuse it with much needed ethos." (via). On the Issue of Cobs A Post at ASP today about the qualities of corn cob pipes. The question concerns how long this cheap little pipes last. From previous conversations on ASP, it seems that the opinion goes both ways; ranging from not very long to decades or more.. I have two of them myself, one of which lies unsmoked. I'm not a big fan of the corn cob, but I do like the certain "Americana" of owning one. To me, the corn cob smokes too hot, tastes foul, and 'sweats' too much outside the bowl. If I'm looking for a cheap pipe that I don't have to worry about, I'm going with cherry wood. Look at some cobs that are for sale here. A bit of design work... So I got some design work done today. I found a website that will automatically generate a text-effect logo for you using the Gimp as a base. Looks like things are coming along, all I need now is content, and the commitment to make that content. Wiki Pipe It's been a while since I last stopped by Lar's project, Wiki Pipe, and it has really taken off since I was last there. I had started an article on Tobacco Types, but it is still incomplete. In the past few days, however, articles on Pipe Packing and Making a Pipe have sprung up.
To Pipefilter.com. Today I managed to get this page looking somewhat decent, as well as register the domain name. The purpose of this site is to collect all of the information, useful links, and awesome posts from ASP, MPC, and other sites into one spot. Each day, I will share links to other pipe blogs, links to interesting posts, and maybe even a story or two of my own (if you're lucky!). I hope you enjoy it! Also, be sure to check out my (coming soon) personal blog here. |
